Andrei Zayonchkovski (1862-1926) commanded the defence of the Romanian-Bulgarian border upon Romania's entry into World War I in August 1916.

Biography

After graduation from Nicholas School of Military Engineering in 1882 Zayonchkovski served in the 5th sapper battalion. In 1888 he graduated from the General Staff Academy and served in a various staff positions.

During the Russo-Japanese war he commanded 85th Vyborg infantry regiment and 2nd brigade of the 3rd Siberian infantry division.

During the world war I Zayonchkovski commanded 30th army corps. Following Romania's entry into the war on 27 August 1916 commanded the Dobruja Detachment defending the Romanian-Bulgarian border. After the February revolution he retired from the army.

In 1918 he joined the Red Army, serving in various staff positions. After the end of Civil war in Russia he, like many other former tsarist officers, switched to teaching in the military academy and writing. He is best known for his two-volume overview of the WWI military operations, which is still the best Russian book on the subject.
