Gustav Körte (
February 8 ,1852 -August 15 ,1917 ) was a German classicalarchaeologist who was born inBerlin . He was the brother ofphilologist Alfred Körte (1866-1946) andsurgeon Werner Körte (1853-1937).He studied classical
philology andarchaeology at theUniversity of Göttingen , and in 1871 continued his studies underHeinrich Brunn (1822-1894) inMunich . From 1875 to 1879 he performed research in Italy and Greece, where from 1877 to 1879 he was an assistant at theGerman Archaeological Institute inAthens . In 1881 he became a professor of archaeology at theUniversity of Rostock , and in 1905-07 was in charge of the German Archaeological Institute inRome . In 1907 Körte attained the chair of archaeology atGöttingen , a position he held until his death in 1917.In 1900, with his brother Alfred Körte, he began the first excavation at
Gordion , an ancientPhrygian city inAsia Minor . In 1904 the two brothers published their findings in a treatise called "Gordion: Ergebnisse der Ausgrabung im Jahre 1900". He also performed important investigations of the necropoli atOrvieto andTarquinia . With Adolf Klügmann, he continued edition of "Etruskische Spiegel", a project involving systematic study ofEtruscan mirrors that was initiated byEduard Gerhard (1795-1867) in 1843.References
