After graduation from the Nicholas cavalry school Zhilinskiy served in a horse guards regiment. In 1883 he graduated from General Staff Academy and served in a different staff positions. During the
Spanish-American War he was Russian military observer at Cuba and published a book on this war. In 1899 he was member of Russian delegation at the Hague peace conference. In 1911-1914 he was chief of the Russian General Staff.In the beginning of the first world war Zhilinsky was appointed commander of the Northwestern front (army group). Northwestern front included 1st and 2nd Russian armies. After the unsuccessful East Prussian Campaign he was relieved of command and sent as a military representative to France.
