Wolfgang Helbig (
February 2 ,1839 -October 6 ,1915 ) was a German classicalarchaeologist who was a native ofDresden .From 1856 to 1861 he studied
philology andarchaeology at the Universities of Göttingen and Bonn, and in 1862 became a member of theGerman Archaeological Institute (DAI) toRome . During his career he traveled extensively throughout Italy, Greece, Russia, France and North Africa. From 1887 he lived in Rome as a private scholar andart dealer , and was broker of numerous works of art for theNy Carlsberg Glyptotek inCopenhagen .Helbig is remembered for his extensive scientific studies involving the wall paintings of
Pompeii . In 1892 he published the first edition of "Führer durch die öffentlichen Sammlungen klassischer Altertümer in Rom", which was a very popular guide to the classical antiquities in Rome.Selected publications
