Brown Peak is the highest point of the Balleny Islands, reaching 1,500 m above sea level. It is situated on Sturge Island near East Antarctica. A stratovolcano whose last known eruption was in June of 2001, Brown Peak is considered to belong to the Balleny Islands Ranges, a subset of the Wilkes Land Coast Ranges. These are in turn a subset of the East Antarctica Ranges.
John Balleny discovered Brown Peak in 1839, and named it for W. Brown, one of the supporters of the Enderby Brothers' expedition. In 1841, James Clark Ross, who sighted the islands on his own expedition to Antarctica, gave it the name Russell or Russel Peak.
