WJZW (105.9 FM, "True Oldies 105.9") is a radio station licensed to Woodbridge, Virginia. The station serves the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area with a oldies format using Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel from ABC Radio Networks. Its transmitter is located in Arlington, Virginia.

From 1994-2008, WJZW was known as "Smooth Jazz 105.9". During the late 1980s and early 1990s it was known as "Classic Rock 105.9" WCXR and, before that, it had been a country station as "KIX 106" WPKX.

History

The station went on the air as WPKX-FM on 1981-12-09. On 1986-01-27, the station changed its call sign to WCXR-FM, on 1994-10-17 to the current WJZW, [cite web |url=http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/call_hist.pl?Facility_id=70037&Callsign=WJZW |title=WJZW Call Sign History |work=United States Federal Communications Commission, audio division]

At 3:00 p.m. on February 29, 2008, Citadel Broadcasting changed the format of WJZW to oldies and moved the former "smooth jazz" format to the HD-2 channel. All on-air employees were fired as a part of the format shift.cite news |work=NorthEast Radio Watch |title=Thie Week's Bloodbath: Citadel |date=2008-03-03 |url=http://www.fybush.com/NERW/2008/080303/nerw.html |first=Scott |last=Fybush] The first song on the new format was "Respect" by Aretha Franklin and, at least initially, no local live on-air talent will be utilized, instead relying on The True Oldies Channel. Before the change, a brief statement was read thanking the staff and listeners of Smooth Jazz 105.9. A callsign change is expected, and Imus in the Morning was added as the new morning show. Shortly after the format switch from smooth jazz, competitor CBS Radio began running ads on its stations in the Washington, DC area promoting streaming audio from its smooth jazz station KTWV in Los Angeles, California.Fact|date=March 2008. Around the same time, WASH 97.1 FM began playing the smooth jazz format on its HD-2 channel. Around 2006, KMVK in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and WISX in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, did the same thing to their former smooth jazz formats prior to the change to rhythmic contemporary music (although the smooth jazz format returned to Philadelphia on a new frequency shortly before the end of that year).
