The property began as Waterfall Ranch, a wild game ranch. In the early 1980s, the ranch began propagation of endangered species.

Conservation
Fossil Rim has been an active participant in preserving
cheetah s since their first litter was born there in 1986. By 2002, twenty percent of the North American population of cheetahs were born at Fossil Rim. The center's Haas Family Cheetah Conservancy, which opened in 2002, increased Fossil Rim's capacity to 30 cheetahs.
