Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is an endangered species research and conservation center near Glen Rose, Texas. The facility has over 1,000 animals from 50 species.

History

The property began as Waterfall Ranch, a wild game ranch. In the early 1980s, the ranch began propagation of endangered species. Grevy's Zebra, addax, cheetah and scimitar-horned oryx were included in the preservation efforts.

Areas and attractions

One of the main attractions at Fossil Rim is a 9.5-mile driving tour.

Conservation

Fossil Rim has been an active participant in preserving cheetahs since their first litter was born there in 1986. By 2002, twenty percent of the North American population of cheetahs were born at Fossil Rim. The center's Haas Family Cheetah Conservancy, which opened in 2002, increased Fossil Rim's capacity to 30 cheetahs. Fossil Rim participates in the Species Survival Plans for 14 endangered or threatened animals. It has also been successful in breeding the Southern African white and black rhinos, red wolves, and Mexican gray wolves, Brazilian maned wolves, and Attwater's Prairie Chickens.
