The 1976-77 was the first for the franchise in Cleveland, after nine seasons in the Bay Area of California as the California (formerly Oakland) Seals. The Seals replaced the World Hockey Association's Cleveland Crusaders who relocated to Minnesota.
The Barons played in the Adams Division and spent most of the season in last place. Midway through the season, majority owner Mel Swig announced the team might have trouble finishing the season. The club missed payroll twice in February. Following the season, George Gund III purchased a controlling interest in the club. [http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nhl/cleveland/barons.html]
