- Wilfred Kalaugher
Wilfrid George Kalaugher (
26 November 1904 –12 August 1999 ) was a New Zealand athlete and scholar, then a teacher inMarlborough College , England.He was born in Auckland where he grew up in Devonport. He was dux of Sacred Heart College in 1921, then attended
Victoria University , where he studied mathematics and competed in athletics, cricket and rugby. In 1926 he was selected as aRhodes Scholar toBalliol College, Oxford , where he represented the college in cricket and gained anOxford Blue after winning a hurdles title.In 1928 he represented New Zealand at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam, competing in the Triple jump and 110 m Hurdles but did not make the finals. Some sources say he represented Great Britain. He may have been selected as he was already near the games venue, although Heidenstrom [ "Athletes of the Century: 100 years of New Zealand track and field" by Peter Heidenstrom (1992, GP Publications, Wellington) ISBN 1869560442 ] suggests favouritism, saying that his performances were embarrassing and that was why he was ignored in most publications and the annual report of the NZAAA did not mention him.
In 1931 he took up a teaching position at in
Marlborough College , England and found his career "amid the playing fields and schools of England" [ "Obituary" in Sunday Star-Times of 19 December 1999 page A9 ] . He died in Newcastle-on-Tyne.References
