- Boston & Albany Railroad Station (Wellesley Hills)
The Wellesley Hills station was designed by noted American
architect Henry Hobson Richardson in1885 for theBoston & Albany Railroad [# Ochsner, Jeffrey Karl, H.H. Richardson: Complete Architectural Works, MIT Press, Cambridge MA 1984] . This station was the last in a series of stations designed by Richardson, all featuring rough-cut light colored stone with dark stone trim around windows and doors, slate roofs, and varying amounts of decorative dark stone carvings [# Ochsner, Jeffrey Karl, H.H. Richardson: Complete Architectural Works, MIT Press, Cambridge MA 1984] . The lower portion of this station is still used by theFramingham/Worcester Line (connectingBoston, MA toWorchester, MA ) of theMBTA Commuter Rail , seeWellesley Hills (MBTA station) . The upper portion now houses an art gallery [http://azfineartgallery.com/] and a dry cleaners. The upper portion (street facing) has been renovated and the original roofing has been removed (see photos on the art gallery's website). However the sides and back (rail facing) sides of the building have been preserved, though the windows are boarded up and large air conditioning units have been installed.References
