- List of Butterflies of North America (Theclinae)
Hairstreaks are a subfamily of Lycaenidae or Gossamer-wings. Their wingspan ranges from 0.6-2.0 inches (1.6-5.1 cm). Hairstreaks come in a variety of colors such as red-brown, green, blue, purple, gray, brown, and black. The hind wings usually have thin tails and eyespots to create a "false head". When at rest or at flowers, they will rub their hind wings together, drawing attention to the false head to protect their real head from predators. Their flight is fast and erratic. Males locate females by perching all day on trees and shrubs.
