- Petlyakov VI-100
The Petlyakov VI-100 (VI standing for "vysotny istrebitel", or high-altitude interceptor) was a
Soviet fighter aircraft prototype of the 1930s.Development
The VI-100 was first conceived in 1938 by a team led by
Vladimir Petlyakov . It was an aerodynamically-clean all-metal monoplane with turbo-supercharged engines. Due to delays in the production of its unique pressurised cockpit, the aircraft was not built until late 1939.Operational history
First flown in late 1939, the aircraft performed well, being very fast for its era. However, by early 1940 interest and priority in designing a dedicated high-altitude interceptor had died out, and the design was reworked to become a dive bomber, which led to the development of the Soviet
