The 51st Battalion was a Australian Army battalion formed in 1916 as part of the doubling of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Primarily a Western Australian battalion, half of its members were veterans of 11th battalion which fought in Gallipoli.
The battalion was deployed to France. in June 1916, taking part in an battle around Mouquet Farm between August and September during which it lost a third of its strength.
In early 1917, the battalion took part in the advance to the Hindenburg Line. It took part in the battles of Messines and Polygon Wood.
In early 1918, it assisted in the repulse of the major German offensive on the western front following the collapse of Russia. It also took part in a Allied counter-attack at Villers-Bretonneux. It took part in the last major Allied offensive of the war between August and September 1918.
The battalion returned to Australia between November 1918 and May 1919 for demobilisation and discharge.
