The film takes place in
New York City during the early 1900s. Amarilly (Mary Pickford ) is the Irish daughter of a widowed scrubwoman. She is proud to be a family member of a hard-working family and takes care of her five roughhouse brothers. One day she meets Gordon Phillips (Norman Kerry ), a High Society man who happens to be a society sculptor. Despite their differences in social class, they fall in love with each other.Problems start to progress when it happens to be Amarilly is in a relationship with Terry McGowan (William Scott). Terry becomes jealous when Amarilly starts hanging out with Gordon and breaks of his engagement with her. Gordon offers Amarilly a job in his family's mansion and introduces her to them. His aunt Mrs. Phillips (Ida Waterman) is a wealthy snob he is unimpressed with Amarilly's social position.
When the entire neighbourhood is in quarantine after the scarlet fever breaks out, Mrs. Phillips decides to take the time to teach Amarilly some high class manners. However, she discovers her nephew has fallen in love with Amarilly and now turns her back against her. She tries to humiliate her by inviting her family over for a social party.
Amarilly is outraged and turns back to her old home. She reconciles with Terry and they get married. It doesn't take long before they start their own family. However, she loses Terry for the second time when he gets shot by accident on the violent streets.
