Green Pajamas

The Green Pajamas formed in the spring of 1984 when Jeff Kelly and Joe Ross recorded and released their first album, Summer Of Lust [Encyclopedia of Northwest Music by James Bush, 1999, Sasquatch Book, Seattle, WA] , pioneering Seattle's answer to the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. "The Pajamas somehow manage to sound like holding two kaleidoscopes side by side and using them as binoculars to see the future of rock'n'roll" wrote Phil McMullen in Bucketfull Of Brains [July 1987] . The band rose to college radio fame in the mid 1980s with the 7" record Kim the Waitress [Loser: The Real Seattle Music Story by Clark Humphrey, 1995 Feral House, Portland, OR] , and, over the last 22 years, has released numerous albums on many labels including Green Monkey, Bomp!, Camera Obscura and Get Hip. Their most recent album is 21st Century Seance on Hidden Agenda Records. The Green Pajamas' current lineup includes founding members Kelly and Ross (on guitar and bass respectively), longtime stalwart Eric Lichter (keyboard), Laura Weller (guitar) and Scott Vanderpool (drums).

History

The year was 1983 when the Green Pajamas germinated in the minds of Joe Ross and Jeff Kelly after they met at a party and discovered a common interest in 60's psychedelia. With the Los Angeles "paisley underground" music scene of `83 spinning at full tilt, our fab duo decided to start a similar scene in their home town of Seattle. By spring of 1984 they had recorded and released a homemade cassette called Summer of Lust described by one U.K. journalist as "British-style psychedelia similar to Dukes of Stratosphear but more off-center and less pastiche.

Eight albums and sixteen years later the Green Pajamas are still ahead of the times while remaining lost in time; a quality that keeps the listener haunted yet always craving more. Get Hip Recordings has just released all of their past singles on one CD titled Indian Winter. In 1997 they released "Strung Behind the Sun" on Australia's Camera Obscura Records, the band's first full-length release since the critically acclaimed "Ghosts Of Love" back in 1990. They recently released the already- well-received "All Clues Lead to Meagan's Bed", and plan to release yet another full-length CD to coincide with their first U.K. appearance at the Terrastock 3 Festival in London this summer.

The Green Pajamas are currently celebrating twenty years of making music, and yet how many people have actually heard of them. During their career they have released numerous albums, and this is just a selection from their vast catalogue.

The obvious influences: The Beatles, The Byrds, Leonard Cohen, Donovan, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Kinks, Rain Parade, Three O'Clock, Velvet Underground, Yardbirds, Neil Young, Zombies.

The less obvious (or at least less-apparent) influences: David Bowie, Kate Bush, Nick Cave, Brian Eno, Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stones, Serge Gainsbourg, Souixie and the Banshees, Violent Femmes among many others.
