Jessie Eliza Bateman (1877-1940) was a stage actress who made her first appearance aged ten in a series of ballets at the Alhambra.Don Gillan (www.stagebeauty.net)]

On 12 December 1889 she had her first dramatic role as "Cobweb" in A Midsummer Night's Dream. She spent five years with F. R. Benson's Shakespearean touring company until 1896 when she returned to London. ["Shakespeare's World at Emory University"] She was then employed by George Edwardes with his touring company for a tour of South Africa. After a brief return the London she toured the United States in H. Reeves-Smith's play A Brace of Partridges.

In 1894 she had married George Augustus Ashfordby-Trenchard. He had started a military career but resigned to pursue a career on stage. He resumed his military career during The Boer War but died in South Africa in 1902.

Jessie joined Gerald du Maurier on stage in 1906 in Raffles. When the run ended in 1907 she married Wilfred G. Chancellor with whom she had three children. ["Internet Movie Database"]

In 1909 she returned to the stage appearing in The Merry Devil at The Playhouse. She continued her stage career and also appeared in a short film, Account Rendered in 1932. She made her last stage appearance in 1933 in Spendlove Hall.
