MesobdellidaeXerobdellidae are a small family of "jawed leeches". The latter might be (but probably are not) a natural,
monophyletic group of hirudiniform proboscisless leeches. Xerobdellidae have three jaws and five pairs of eyes, the fourth and fifth being separated by one or two eyeless segments. One each of the mere threegenera placed herein occurs inChile ("Mesobdella ") andEurope ("Xerobdella "). "Diestecostoma " is more widespread and found in Central and northernSouth America . This peculiar distribution strongly suggests they are arelict Pangaea n group, which had already been present by the start of theJurassic 250million years ago .Borda "et al." (2008)]These leeches resemble the
Haemadipsidae and were included there by many authors, but this has always been controversial. Their status as a distinct family is supported by sequence analysis of the nuclear 18S and 28SrDNA and mitochondrialCOI gene s as well as theanatomy of theirsexual organ s andnephridia ; the latter are located at the belly rather than along the body sides as in the Haemadipsidae proper. They feed on
blood – typically ofamphibian s – and smallinvertebrate except "Mesobdella", which is a blood-feeder exclusively and ist recorded to attack humans on occasion.Footnotes
