Photofrin

Photofrin (porfimer sodium) is a medication used as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy for palliative treatment of obstructing endobronchial non-small cell lung cancer and palliative treatment of obstructing oesophageal cancer. (FDA approval Dec 1995)

In August 2003 the FDA approved its use for Barrett’s Esophagus [http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/answers/2003/ans01246.html] .

Photofrin is a mixture of oligomers formed by ether and ester linkages of up to eight porphyrin units [http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/onctools/labels.cfm?GN=porfimer%20sodium] .
