Sir Andrew Porter, 1st Baronet

PORTER, SIR ANDREW MARSHALL (1837-1919)

Andrew Porter was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1837. He was the son of Rev John Scott Porter. Andrew Marshall Porter was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, and Queen's College in Belfast. In 1860 he was called to the Bar and by 1872 had become Queen's Counsel. From 1881 to 1884 he was a Member of Parliament for County Londonderry.

Sir Andrew Marshall Porter became Solicitor General in 1881 and Attorney General in the Gladstone government 1882-1883. Sir Andrew Marshall Porter was appointed Master of the Rolls in 1883 and served in that post until 1907. While living in Dublin, Sir Andrew Porter resided at 42 Merrion Square East as noted in Ullysses by James Joyce. In 1902, he was made a baronet by King Edward VII.
