Lucrezia di Lorenzo de' Medici

Lucrezia di Lorenzo de' Medici (4 August 1470-c. November 1553) was the eldest daughter of Lorenzo de' Medici and Clarice Orsini and mother of Maria Salviati and Giovanni Salviati, who was a cardinal from 1517 until his death.

Marriage and Issue

She married on the 10 September 1489 to Jacopo Salviati they had ten children, among them were:

* Giovanni Salviati (1490-1553), became cardinal in 1517

* Maria Salviati (1499-1543), she was the mother of Cosimo I de' Medici

* Francesca Salviati married 1. Piero Gualterotti and then to Ottaviano de' Medici, she was the mother of Pope Leo XI.

These three children either held great positions in Europe or were parents of important people. Lucrezia's husband died in 1533.

Descendents

Through her daughter Maria, Lucrezia is an ancester of the Medici family as well as a descendent, an ancester of Kings of France and also Kings of England. Her grandson was Cosimo I de' Medici, he became Grand Duke of Tuscany, his son was Francesco I de' Medici who succeeded his father in 1574, among Francesco's children were Eleonora de' Medici and Marie de' Medici. Eleonora married Vincenzo I Gonzaga, their son was Francesco IV Gonzaga through Eleonora, Lucrezia is an ancester of the Dukes of Mantua. Through Francesco I de' Medici's other daughter Marie, Lucrezia is ancester of French Kings through Marie's marriage to Henri IV of France, Marie's grandson was Louis XIV of France. Marie also had a daughter called Henrietta Maria who married Charles I of England, Henrietta Maria and Charles were the parents of Charles II of England and James II of England. James was the father of Mary II of England and Anne of Great Britain.

Later Life

Lucrezia got to see ten great grandchildren through her daughter Maria and her daughter would look after all of them, Lucrezia never really got to see them and very sadly Maria died in 1543 aged 44, Lucrezia was upset by the loss of her daughter, Lucrezia's exact death date is unknown but we know that she died in November of 1553.

Her age at the time of her death was 83 years old, which was very old for women in the 16th centery, she had outlived three grandchildren.
