Plot synopsis

In part two of the series premiere, Naomi finds herself in trouble when she fails an assignment and Ryan and Kelly bring the issue to Harry's attention. Harry tells her that she has to complete the essay although Naomi is very unhappy with this decision as it would mean that she has less time to get ready for her Sweet Sixteen party. Meanwhile, Dixon must deal with jealous teammates on the lacrosse team and Annie meets a potential love interest, Ty Collins. Ty invites Annie to go to dinner with him. Little does she know but this restaurant happens to be in San Francisco. At Naomi's Sweet 16, she receives a prolonged text from Dixon telling her that Ethan is cheating on her. To get her revenge, she sleeps with Ehtan's rival, George. In the end, Ethan breaks up with her after a talk with Annie. He then stops by Annie's house to bring back a toy they'd won together a few summers ago but see's her kissing Ty Collins at her front door.

Annie Wilson and her brother Dixon are newcomers to California, and their first day at West Beverly High leaves no doubt they're not in Kansas anymore. The Wilson family, including dad Harry and mom Debbie, has relocated to Beverly Hills to keep an eye on Harry's mother Tabitha, a feisty-but-faded former television star and a charter member of the Betty Ford Clinic.

For Annie and Dixon, the awkwardness of being the new kids is made worse by the fact that their dad has taken a job as the high school principal. The school is one big culture shock for Annie, a sweet and friendly girl with a passion for the theater, and Dixon, a star athlete and scholar who was adopted by the Wilson family after they took him in as a foster child. Annie and Dixon have a close sibling relationship, which they'll need to help them cope with all the new cliques and classmates, including Naomi, a hot, spoiled, rich girl; Ethan, a popular jock whose abilities rival Dixon's; Navid, an aspiring journalist who heads up the school's daily newscast; and Silver, a rebel who produces and stars in a YouTube-type video series.

Even the faculty seems hip and sophisticated at West Beverly High, such as smart and funny teacher Ryan Matthews and beautiful guidance counselor Kelly Taylor ("Jennie Garth"). Further casting details of the 2008 spin-off have emerged as "The Hollywood Reporter" announced on March 19, 2008 that The CW has begun casting even before a script has been completed.

On April 15, 2008, Rob Thomas announced that he was stepping down as the creator of the series, due to his commitment to two ABC drama pilots. Writers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah ("What About Brian", "Freaks & Geeks") are now the new executive producers.
