Ontario Student Vote, 2003

Ontario Student Vote, 2003

The 2003 Ontario Student Vote was held in conjunction with the 2003 provincial election in Ontario, Canada. Students across Ontario in both secondary schools and elementary schools were given mock ballots which were exactly the same as the ones used in the election. The votes were cast on the day of the election, and the results were announced during the normal election coverage. It should be noted that the student votes were in no way counted towards the actual election results. The vote was done as an exercise of democracy for students, and was meant to teach them about the democratic process. The Ontario student vote was one the first student votes to occur, and others happened subsequently for the 2004 federal election and for elections in other provinces. A similar student vote was held just prior to the Ontario Provincial Elections of 2007. (See also Alberta Student Vote, 2004)

Results

Secondary schoolsThe results were interesting, and can be seen as an exaggeration of the political mood at the time. The incumbent Progressive Conservatives, who lost the actual election, did not win a single seat in the student vote. This reflects the mood of Ontarians who were upset at the Progressive Conservative government. The students even gave the Green Party a seat.

Elementary schoolsOnly schools in 83 of the 103 ridings took part. The results were a little closer to the actual results, but the Tories still did not do well.
