Toussaint Hočevar (
25 June 1927 -21 April 1987 ) or Toussaint Hocevar was aSlovenian American economic historian .Biography
Hočevar was born in
Ljubljana ,Slovenia , then part of theKingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes . He spent his childhood in the small town ofVrhnika near Ljubljana, where his father served asmayor . Between 1937 and 1941 Toussaint frequented a elite privateRoman Catholic high school in the town of Bol on theDalmatia n island ofBrač administred by theDominican order . After the Axisinvasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, he moved back to Slovenia and continued his studies in the prestigiousBežigrad Grammar School in Ljubljana, graduating in 1945. In 1946 he enrolled at theUniversity of Ljubljana . The same year, however, he decided to leaveCommunist Yugoslavia and emigrate to the neighbouringAustria . In 1951 he graduated fromeconomy at the University ofInnsbruck . The same year he moved to theUnited States , continuing his studies at theUniversity of Chicago .In 1957, he became professor at the
Northern State University inAberdeen, South Dakota . In 1960 he started teaching atKeuka College inNew York , in 1966 at theFlorida State University , and then at theUniversity of New Orleans where he stayed until his death. He died inNew Orleans ,Louisiana , in 1987, and was buried inSanta Rosa Beach, Florida .Academic achievements
Hočevar was one of the foremost researchers of the economic history of the
Slovene Lands and of thewestern Balkans . He was one of the co-founders of theSociety for Slovene Studies . He lectured at numerous universities inCentral Europe , including theUniversity of Munich , Klagenfurt and Ljubljana. The "Toussaint Hocevar Memorial Award" granted by the University of New Orleans is named after him.Besides numerous treatises in history, economy and
system theory , he was also the co-author, together withMiran Hladnik , of a popular manual ofSlovene language for travelers, which was publishedposthumous ly in 1988.Major works
