Society of Headmasters & Headmistresses of Independent Schools

The Society of Headmasters & Headmistresses of Independent Schools - SHMIS is an Association of Headmasters and Headmistresses over 100 Independent schools in the UK (with a couple of overseas members). It is one of the constituent organisations of the Independent Schools Council. The society's headquarters are based in Market Harborough, in Leicestershire, England.

SHMIS was formed in 1961 as a forum for Heads to share ideas and experience. SHMIS now represents schools of all sizes throughout the country . Many SHMIS schools are boarding schools; a number are specialist music, dance, and performing arts schools; several member schools specialise in support for children with learning difficulties.

SHMIS allows into its membership Heads of both single-sex and co-educational independent day and boarding secondary schools. Schools seeking membership will normally be members of the Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools, with heads having membership of the Association of School and College Leaders.
