Plutext is a Collaborative real-time editor for WordprocessingML documents. It is free software / open source software. WordprocessingML is a component of the OpenXML ISO standard. Plutext also supports the variant of WordprocessingML which Microsoft Word 2007 uses as its default filetype (.docx).

The Plutext software comprises a server component, and a client component.

The server component uses JCR, and is implemented on Alfresco (software).

There are three clients available: Word 2007 with an add-in (on XP or Vista), docx4all (all platforms supporting Java 6), and a web browser client.

Plutext's design is geared towards users who require a high degree of control over the collaboration process. As such, the end user controls when their edits are transmitted, and when they receive third party edits. All third party edits are highlighted in the document using OpenXML ins/del markup (implemented in Word as track changes).
