Working as the group's CEO he incorporated the Visual Editors social network in 2004 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity, positioning the site as an educational exchange for student and professional journalists working in the world's newsrooms. The charity is operated by a volunteer board of directors. He was born in Naperville, Illinois in 1964 and currently resides there. Montgomery began his career as an editorial artist at the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel in 1990 after graduating from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in Journalism. He held a number of editorial positions for newspapers in Florida and Illinois between 1990 and 2005.

Visual Editors, NFP was registered in 2004 in the state of Illinois as a 501(c)(3) certified public charity. Journalism educator

Since 2005 Montgomery has taught visual journalism in the U.S., Scandinavia, Asia, the Middle East, Canada and Eastern Europe [ [http://www.robbmontgomery.com/category/education/ Articles about these training events] ] . He has worked with the Media Development Project to help newspapers improve their newspaper design and train reporters how to report in multi media.In 2007 he produced video projects, interactive communities, blogging projects, and digital journalism workshops in Egypt, Dubai South Africa, Malaysia, Sweden, Latvia, and Poland.
