Medal record Competitor for Nepal Men’s taekwondo Asian Games Bronze 2002 Busan Featherweight Bronze 2006 Doha Welterweight Deepak Bista (born July 2, 1976) is a male Nepalese taekwondo practitioner. He won the bronze medal in the welterweight category (-78 kg) at the 2006 Asian Games, and competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics. On August 8, 2008 at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, Bista was the flagbearer for Nepal.

Childhood
Deepak had a normal childhood. He was known to be an obidient and a brilliant student. He was a top student during his early years of schooling. He passed the SLC exams from Bina Higher Secondary School.
Deepak was interested in volleyball during his school days. He was a participant of Birendra Shield Inter School comptetion. However, his parents were against the idea of Deepak devoting most of his time to sports than school because their dream was to make him an engineer and not a sportsman. As a very normal thing in Nepal, he got some good lashings from his father for spending his time in Volleyball. He recalls that once he was punished by his parents by making him stand out of his house for the whole night for participating in a volleyball match without their approval.
After SLC (School Leaving Certification)
His parents dream was to make him an Engineer. After SLC, according to his parents wish, Deepak joined I.Sc at Siddha Nath Science Campus in Mahendra Nagar. Bista paid more interest over volleyball during his study. After the completion of I.Sc. Bista started to teach in Gyan Niketan Boarding School which was jointly opened by his parents. Till then, every body knew him as the best volley Ball Player. But, his love towards the game fade away when he realized that team game is not so good enough that individual game. Bista decided to play individual game.
Entry in taekwondo
After he decided to play individual game, Deepak have had tough true choosing the game. But suggestions and inspiration from Coach Govinda Bista and friend Keshab Bhatta, Bista choose taekwondo. Deepak was in trouble when he though his parents would never allow him to play a game. After then, he wanted money to join a taekwondo dojang. Bista theft Rs.300 from his uncle Damber Bista's Gyan Niketan School and admitted at Dhangadi Dojang. Hence, his career in taekwondo started in this way.
First success in taekwondo
He started to play taekwondo but without the support from his parents. He started training with bare foot, pad and track suit. But, he passed his yellow belt grading within two months. The story took a u-turn when he defeated Black Belt holding player in the National Taekwondo Championship held in Hetauda in 1996, to the gold. Since then, Bista has been unbeaten in Normal Championship.
Struggle in taekwondo
Bista achieved success within two months of taking up taekwondo, but his parents never liked him playing a game. But his mother, as a maternal love, provided him beans and milk as a diet. Bista, then had a dream of playing International game after being success in national championship. Bista wanted to be famous like other famous players such as Alok Rana (taekwondo practitioner based in Australia) and put him in the rank of other players, Sangina Baidya, Narayan Gurung, Bidhan Lama.
Journey to Kathmandu
It was really tough to go to Kathmandu without the support of his parents. But still, he decided to go. He got an idea of going to Kathmandu for further studies. But his parents did not approve of it. And so he decided to leave home with help of a bus driver and helper, friends who helped him with free bus ride. To give the entrance exam at Nepal commerce Campus to study in Bachelor Level. After that, his parents were forced to send him to Kathmandu. Deepak come to Kathmandu again with his cousin brother. His uncle Khadka Bista helped him by providing Rs.1500 per month. Deepak joined central Dojang at Dasrath Stadium and continued his study simultaneously.
Conclusion
Starting Days, mere too harsher for Bista. But, collecting confidence and self esteem, Bista contrived his play and study together. He sharpened his talent but could not continue his study after BBS. His parents also started to love him after seeing his success on game. Spending one decade in taekwondo, Deepak stamped his own introduction also added white feature on his hat. After winning gold medal in 1999 SAF games held in Kathmandu, Deepak chucked the gold in Pakistan despite fracturing his leg. The 2002 Asian Games held in Busan, South Korea added other white feathers. Bista chucked Bronze medal and Doha Asian Games in 2006 was also the success part of Bista where he won Bronze Medal to become first Nepali player to win medal for the second time in Asian games.
No doubt, he is number one player till date. He visited lots of countries and trained from South Korea, Thailand and United States. He is affiliated with various organization and trained many school boys. After dedicating his life in sports, Bista is managing his hand to mouth with just temporary coaching job provided by National Sports Council. Bista never decided to exile in foreign land, like what other did to earn just money. Obedient to motherland, Bista decided to continue his play till the country needs him.
