Johanna was named after her paternal aunt.

Early life

Johanna had brown hair and brown eyes. She grew up in Zell am See with her siblings: Rupert von Trapp (1911-1992) Agathe von Trapp (1913), Maria Franziska von Trapp (1914), Werner von Trapp and Hedwig von Trapp (1917-1972). The last sister Martina von Trapp (1921-1951) was born in Klosterneuburg (Austria). The Trapp Family moved from Zell-am-See to Klosterneuburg, because their home called a lake hotel called "Kitzsteinhorn" were flooded. Before living in the hotel, the Trapp Family lived on a farm called "Erlhof" near Agathe Whitehead von Trapp's mothers and her sisters.

1922 Johanna's mother died of scarlet fever and was buried in Klosterneuburg. Johanna was nearly three years old.

1925 The Trapp Family moved to Salzburg-Aigen.

1927 Her father Georg Ludwig von Trapp remarried, to Maria Augusta Kutschera the teacher of Johanna and her sister Maria Franziska . Georg and Maria Augusta had three children together: Rosemarie (1929), Eleonore (1931) and Johannes (1939).

Johanna always had troubles with her stepmother and talked about this problem in an interview from 1993.

Career

The Trapp Family left Austria in summer of 1938 and went to America. Johanna was nearly nineteen years old. She sang first soprano in the family chorus together with her sister Agathe von Trapp.

Johanna married Ernst Florian Winter on Easter Monday in 1948 and had seven children. She lived with her family - four daughters and three sons (one of them was stillborn) - in Austria and America.

Johanna worked together with her sisters Agathe von Trapp and Maria Franziska von Trapp in 1993 on an exhibition in Salzburg. In 1994 Johanna died in Vienna after the effects of a stroke at the age of 75. She was buried in Vienna.

Johanna was portrayed as the character "Marta" in The Sound of Music .

Johanna became a naturalized United States citizen in 1948.
