Gayle Edlund Wilson

Gayle Wilson’s career has been primarily as a community volunteer, a role in which she has been recognized as a leader and innovator. As California’s First Lady (1991-1999) Gayle worked to realize the Governor’s vision of a California in which every child has the best possible start in life, reaching school age healthy and motivated to learn. She also served as a catalyst for the establishment of an excellence-based California state summer school for math and science, now known as [http://www.ucop.edu/cosmos/ COSMOS] . Each summer this four-week residential program located on four University of California campuses serves over 600 high school aged students. Gayle currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of [http://www.gilead.com Gilead Sciences, Inc.] , The College Access Foundation of California, and the [http://www.rmpf.org/board.asp Ralph M. Parsons Foundation] . She is a member of the Board of Trustees of California Institute of Technology (Caltech), [http://www.burnham.org/ the Burnham Institute for Medical Research] , and she is the chairman of the Advisory Board and primary fundraiser for COSMOS. She is a former member of the board of ARCO as well as the Center for Excellence in Education.

Gayle is a past president of the Junior League of San Diego as well as a founding member of the San Diego chapter of ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists).

As a young woman Gayle earned national recognition as one of the top 40 finalists of the Westinghouse Science Talent Search (now the Intel Science Talent Search). She then furthered her academic career at Stanford University, where she earned a degree in biology and a Phi Beta Kappa key.

Gayle’s avocations include painting in watercolor, lyric writing, and performing. She is married to former California Governor, Pete Wilson. Gayle is the mother of two sons, and she is blessed with two terrific daughters-in-law and five grandchildren.
