SoftMAC

A SoftMAC network device is a device that requires software to implement MAC Sublayer Management Entity (MLME) [ [http://linuxwireless.org/en/developers/Documentation/Glossary#SoftMAC SoftMAC definition at linuxwireless.org] ]

In Linux, the mac80211 subsystem provides capabilities for SoftMAC devices and additional capabilities (such as mesh networking) for devices with limited function. [ [http://linuxwireless.org/mac80211book/ Mac80211 Book at linuxwireless.org] ]
