Women's League of Chinland

Women's League of Chinland

The Women’s League of Chinland works as an umbrella organization for its member groups concerned with the issues of Chin women.

Formed on December 4, 2004, the WLC was the result of a seminar on "Strengthening Unity and Coalition Building Among Chin Women", which was attended by nine different Chin Women's Organizations.

Objectives and Activities

The WLC works in several areas, their main aims being:
* To strengthen unity amongst Chin women.
* To improve the status of women in the Chin community.
* To promote democracy, freedom, peace and human rights in Burma.
* To create more opportunities for women's participation in social and political activities.
* To aid the strengthening of genuine solidarity within the Chin nation.
* To prioritise women's education, healthcare and social welfare.
* To strengthen coalitions with other national and international women's organizations.
* To preserve Chin culture, traditions and literature. To achieve these objectives, the WLC has various projects including training programs, internships, and workshops on topics such as women’s reproductive health, income generation, basic human rights, gender equality and counselling skills for female victims of domestic violence. The organization has also recently started a volunteer programme, allowing volunteers from overseas to stay and work in their offices in Aizawl, Mizoram. Additionally, WLC welcomes any groups of people or organizations that are willing to organise a training program or workshop on the Indian-Burmese border or in New Delhi. WLC Publications

The WLC prioritises advocacy and campaigns which very few political organizations on the Indo-Burma border focus on. For its political and human rights campaign, the WLC has published the report "Unsafe State", which documents the rape cases committed by the Burmese military soldiers against Chin women.
