Stafon Johnson (born February 6, 1988 in Compton, California) is an American football running back for the USC Trojans.

Early years

Johnson played high school football at Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, California. He played both running back and defensive back. A highly regarded college football recruit, was regarded as the No. 18 overall prospect in the country and the No. 2 running back by Rivals.com; in addition to the University of Southern California, he received offers from Florida, Miami, UCLA and paid serious attention to Georgia and Washington. College career

During his freshman, 2006 season, Johnson did not redshirt but played in only three games, rushing for 17 yards on three carries. Despite being a highly regarded recruit with strong athletic ability, he did not show strong work ethic or discipline in fall practices and found himself mostly on the scout team. Johnson had a breakthrough in the 2007 season, finishing second on the team in rushing yards with 673, with five touchdowns. In the season opener against Idaho, Johnson scored his first career touchdown on a seven yard reception. In 2008, his junior year, he is expected to compete for the Trojans starting running back job.

Personal

Johnson was raised with strong discipline by his mother, Kim Mallory; he has no tattoos, no earrings, does not drink soft drinks. He had a close relationship with is grandfather, Larry Mallory, nicknamed "Big Dad", who serves as a father figure to him who attended practices and games. In the spring after his freshman year, his mother and grandfather both met with USC head coach Pete Carroll to see how Johnson could improve his time with the football team; one week later Larry Mallory passed away from a heart attack at age 66.
