MR.K was born in 1978 in California. His father was a DJ and radio personality, his mother a Union organizer. The family moved to Las Vegas and then finally to Minneapolis MN. MR.K has an uncle known as D.J. Kool Akiem of the underground hip hop group the MICRANOTS (Rhymesayers Entertainment.)
MR.K started his music career toting records for his uncle in the late eighties and eventually spinning in between sets. He met a young recording artist named I Self Devine and introduced him to Kool Akiem and a new group formed, the Micranots. While serving time in Red Wing correctional facility he began perfecting his unique style of delivery. Released in 1993 he formed his own group "the FRS" with long time associates Mobonix and Dj Wesu. The album titled "Breathe Easy" dropped later that year.
FRS and the Micranots started "the Universal Vibe Squad". Members were MR.K, DJ Kool Akiem, I Self Devine, Mobonix, DJ Wesu, Buddah Tye, and Truth Maze. They moved to Georgia in early 1994 and cultivated the Atlanta underground hip hop scene along with "Parts Unknown" and "Mass Influence".
In the summer of 1999 MR.K started touring with the Micranots as back up vocalist and manager. The success of the Micranots fueled MR.K's passion for the the underground hip hop movement. When the Micranots broke up MR.K went back to working on his own career. He established himself as Atlanta's most recognized underground hip hop promoter. Doing shows with Common, Atmosphere, MF DOOM, Onyx, Too Short, Witch Doctor, Mobb Deep, Diamond D, and many more.
