Robert H. Scales is a retired US Army Major General and former commandant of the US Army War College. He now works as a military analyst, news commentator, and author. A graduate of West Point, he holds a PhD in History from Duke University. [Applied Physics Lab biography]

Commissioned as a field artillery officer, MG Scales served in the Army for over thirty years, including commanding two field artillery batteries in Vietnam. He commanded a field artillery battalion in Korea, and the US Army Field Artillery Traing Center.

During his service in the Vietnam War, he won the Silver Star for action during the battles around Hamburger Hill.

He serves as a commentator for both NPR and Fox News.
