Fire Lad is a fictional character, a superhero in the DC Universe.

Fictional character biography

Fire Lad was born Staq Mavlen on the planet Shwar. As a young man, he inhaled vapors from a crashing meteor and gained the ability to breath fire. He can set any combustible item on fire, melt thin metal walls, burn out impurities in chemicals and set up signal flares. He tries out for the Legion of Super-Heroes, but is rejected when his power is deemed "too dangerous." Along with several other failed applicants, he helps form the Legion of Substitute Heroes.

His hair shape (that of a flame) is not a superpower, he just likes to wear it that way.

Fire Lad appears in the one-shot "Legion of Substitute Heroes" comic book, where is portrayed in a more comical fashion. In this story, Fire Lad tends to accidentally cause fires when he sneezes, and suffers from allergies.

In the Action Comics storyline Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes, Fire Lad and his fellow substitutes are sent to distract the renegade Justice League. Fire Lad is shown to have much greater control over his powers, and is able to reach the melting point of gold without losing control. Unlike before, he can actually turn his hair into flames when powered up.

Appearances in other media

Fire Lad appears in two episodes of the "Legion of Super Heroes" animated series, "Lightning Storm" and "The Substitute". Both appearances are non-speaking.
