James Bertram (Carnegie secretary)
- James Bertram (Carnegie secretary)
James Bertram (1872-1934) was the personal secretary of Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist and philanthropist, from 1897-1914. He also served the Carnegie Corporation of New York from its inception in 1911 as secretary and trustee until his death in 1934. He had an important role in the disbursement of Carnegie's gifts. Booker T. Washington's published correspondence shows how Bertram was often the intermediary between Carnegie and the recipients of his largesse.[cite web |url=http://www.library.cmu.edu/Research/Archives/UnivArchives/BertramAid.html |title=James Bertram Collection |first=Jennie |last=Benford |publisher=Carnegie Mellon Libraries |date=2004-11-16 |accessdate=2008-08-13 ] ]Bertram was born in Scotland and first worked for Andrew Carnegie at his Scottish home Skibo Castle. In the USA he took a close interest in the new Carnegie libraries, commenting on the architectural plans submitted by applicants. Bertram's interventions discouraged extravagant architectural features and encouraged adherence to published guidelines. Bertram also involved himself with grants for pipe organs.
