July 16 1893 -August 6 1978 , was an admiral in theImperial Japanese Navy duringWorld War II . He commanded the battleship "Kongo" at the beginning of the war. Later, Koyanagi commanded Destroyer Squadron 10 during theGuadalcanal Campaign . He was appointed Chief of Staff of the 2nd Fleet underTakeo Kurita in July 1943. Koyanagi was severely wounded during theBattle of Leyte Gulf when the cruiser "Atago" upon which he was stationed was sunk by the US submarine "Darter". Surviving the war, Koyanagi died in 1978.References
