Carlo Palermo

Carlo Palermo (Avellino, 1947) is an Italian lawyer, previously he was a magistrate, assistant prosecutor at Trent from 1975 to 1984 and at Trapani till 1989. Afterwards he resigned from his magistrature.

Life

In Italy Carlo Palermo became to be famous as magistrate after his criminal investigation at Trent in 1980, about an international drug and arms trafficking, with interest of Italian politicians; [ [http://www.fondazionecipriani.it/Scritti/palermo.html Luigi Cipriani, "Armi e droga nell'inchiesta del giudice Palermo", Fondazione Cipriani, 1985] ] Palermo was accused injustly to violate their parliamentary privileges and obliged to present himself to the CSM ("Superior Council of Judiciary"). [A. Stille, "Excellent Cadavers", Vintage Books, New York 1995, p. 204] After terrible disputes, in 1985 Palermo decided to move to Trapani (Sicily), to continue his investigations in their connections with the Mafia; he was in place of his friend Giangiacomo Ciaccio Montalto, killed by the Mafia in 1983. Stille, "ibidem", p. 205-206] After few months Mafia tried to wipe out him by means of a car-bomb attack, killing a young woman, Barbara Asta, and her little sons, the twin-brothers Salvatore and Giuseppe, that were near the place of the explosion: this episode is called the "strage di Pizzolungo (Pizzolungo massacre)" of 1985 (Pizzolungo is a suburb of Trapani). Palermo was only injured, and someone exposed the persuasion that the assassination attempt against him had been caused by his precedent investigations. [Carlo Palermo, "Il giudice.
