Automatisms (medicine)

In medicine, automatisms are repetitive unconscious gestures such as finger rubbing, lip smacking, chewing, or swallowing. This type of automatic behaviour can occur in certain types of epilepsy, for example in the complex partial seizures of temporal lobe epilepsy.
