* Ceres, largest of all asteroids is discovered by the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi (1746-1826), and is briefly considered to be a planet.
* In optics, interference between light beams is discovered by Thomas Young (1773-1829), showing the wave nature of light.
* In chemistry, Tantalum is discovered (before niobium).
* In chemistry, niobium is discovered in ore called columbite by Charles Hatchett who names it "columbium" (renamed "niobium" in 1950).
* In chemistry, vanadium, a transition metal, is discovered by Andreas del Rio in Mexico.
