Sleeping States is a musical solo project of British musician Markland Starkie (born 1981).

Music

Started in 2004 in London, Sleeping States falls predominantly in the songwriter genre. Sleeping States has also been associated with Lo-Fi [http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=53362 Boomkat Website] , DIY and Queercore [Queercore Article] , having released a number of 7"s, cassette-only EPs and a CD-R album on several small DIY labels in Britain, including the Queercore label/collective Homocrime [Spencer, Amy (2005) "DIY: The Rise of Lo-fi Culture"] .

The most recent Sleeping States album, "There The Open Spaces" was released in September 2007 on TOME Records in the UK, Misra Records in North America and EtchnSketch Records in Australasia [http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/45564-there-the-open-places Pitchforkmedia.com] . It garnered comparisons to artists including Adem [Cook, B. While recorded material is mostly performed by Starkie alone, he often plays live as Sleeping States with other musicians as a band.

A limited edition split 7” single with the London-based band Fanfarlo was released in February 2008 (Sleeping States performing a cover of "Call Me" by the 4AD band Throwing Muses), and an EP reworking older Sleeping States material is due for release in late 2008 on Bella Union.
