- EFL-Law
EFL-Law is an online website created by Paul A. Robertson, author of the internet Asian EFL Journals. The website is associated with Paul Robertson's company, "Time-Taylor Group".
The EFL-Law website offers several helpful and informative instructional documents on various legal processes in reference to EFL teaching and working overseas. Although neither EFL-Law, Time-Taylor Group, or Paul A. Robertson are registered to provide legal service or assistance in any mannor, it is done so for educational purposes only through the EFL-Law website and the forum.
Forum
The forum is a place accessible through the EFL-Law website, that has been utilized by many foreign nationals in a time of dire distress, to get experienced advice from other foreign nationals with more time under their belt (ex. Paul Robertson).
The forum has received ridicule for its' slightly nazi tactics of handling conflicts of opinions or assistance, resulting in the banning of some users and removal of all posts regarding the topic of interest. This is not typical of online forums, but given the nature of the forum and its' self proclaiming importance, it could be understood the level of moderation being done there.
Many informative postings may be found in the forums, although not all forums allow posts or responses to moderator posts.
TTI
In 2007, Paul Robertson opened up his first private study school commonly referred to in South Korea as a "hagwon". The hagwon was named [http://www.ttibusan.com TTI] or [http://www.ttibusan.com Time Taylor International] , after his website's company name "Time-Taylor Group". Located in the southern side of the pennensula in the city of Busan, the school has many affiliations both online and offline, reportedly raking in a wide variety of students, from adult students seeking TESOL Teaching Certification, Flight attendants looking to improve English skills, and of course many normal English students.
The website for TTI links to a free Korean message board for the username "ttienglish.cafe", and is the 'official' TTI website until further notice.
After a return on his investment, Paul A. Robertson announced on his forum that he would be leaving for the Phillipines, where he has started another similar school to TTI in Busan.
It has been debated that the success of these and other schools in Asia started by native English speakers, is often higher than those started and owned by locals.
Location
EFL-Law is available only on the internet, however TTI is located in Busan, South Korea. Contact information for both TTI in Busan, and for Paul Robertson can be achieved by using Whois.net to retrieve the domain registration information.
Ethical Controversy
Several topics have arisen in the past regarding the ethics of Paul Robertson. Some of those are:
(A) Internet Profits
The website for EFL-Law states that it was started by attorneys as a non-profit organization. Paul Robertson is neither an attorney, nor is any moderator on the forum reportedly an attorney. (Awaiting responses to inquery)The website briefly locked its' forums in June, replaced with a link for "legal help". Once the link was clicked on, it took you to a legal fee table where you were instructed that legal assistance from Paul Robertson would cost up to $50 USD per question for a normal answer. The only way a legally registered organization could offer such a price for legal fees would be if (1) it was registered for profit; (2) registered to provide legal services. At least one of these is false.
(B) Forum Wishy Washy
Paul Robertson reportedly banned a netizen stating the user was racist. In several posts by Paul Robertson, he explains in detail that "I'll never trust a Korean, they don't do honest business. They lie, steal and cheat.". This is both hypocritical and unethical if he indeed is an organization designed for educational purposes.
(C)Wikipedia's Point of View
Wikipedia has banned Paul Robertson's website, "EFL-Law.com", due to its' misleading or false representation that has been discussed above.
Person
Paul Robertson is valued in the internet world as the author of EFL-Law's website, numerous forum articles, the author of the Asian EFL Journals, and of two published books. To some he may be one of false representation, but overall Paul Robertson is respected as a experienced individual in the EFL world, and as a great international businessman by many foreign nationals.
