Pro-British Maltese

Pro-British Maltese

The Pro-British Maltese refers to the Maltese people who desire cultural or political unity with Britain. This contrasts with the Pro-Italian Maltese who desire integration with Italy.

History

After becoming part of the commonwealth, and receiving vast populational influxes from Britain, the Maltese culture became vastly restructured. Many Maltese who trace their ancestry to the British influxes there, are often more domestically accustomed to British culture, while the original inhabitants of the island may feel culturally Italian.

Today

Today, the split between British culture and Italian culture is present in many areas. The nationalist party of Malta is seen as being pro-Italy, while the labour party is seen as favoring Britain. In sport, there is also a clear divide between supporters of Italian and British teams. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/euro2000/teams/england/773547.stm] ]
