balsrc=The .450 Marlin is a firearms cartridge designed as a modernized version of the venerable
.45-70 lever-action cartridge. It was designed by a joint team of Marlin andHornady engineers headed by Hornady's Mitch Mittelstaedt [cite web |url=http://www.gmdr.com/lever/450mtext.htm |title= 450 Marlin|accessdate=2008-08-05 |work= |publisher=Gregory J. Mushial |date=2002 ] , and was released in 2000, with cartridges manufactured by Hornady and rifles manufactured by Marlin, mainly the Model 1895M levergun. While similar in most respects to its parent, the .45-70, the .450 boasts a heavier case, a less pronounced rim, and a belt at the base that prevents it from being chambered in old .45-70 rifles that would be unable to hold up to the extra pressure of the cartridge. The belt is also longer than usual, to prevent it from chambering in smaller-bore 7mm Magnum or .338 Magnum rifles.
