Bercian dialect

Dialectal variety spoken in El Bierzu and today almost extinguished, proved from the meeting between the galician language and a leonese language extremely related to the asturian western speeches.

El Bierzu has been considered to be always a bridge between the galician and the leonese one; but with proper very differentiated [Pueblos y ríos bercianos: (significado e historia de sus nombres),Jesús García y García, 1994,ISBN: 84-604-8787-3] characters that led to defining this speech of El Bierzu as bercian dialect in the 19th century, being fitted inside the linguistic galician domain by Antonio Fernández Morales in 1861 and inside the linguistic leonese domain by Ramon Menéndez Pidal, demonstrating this one that the dividing line between the leonese one and the galician would place between the basins of the river Cúa and of the Sil. In 1934, Verardo García Rey, gathers the vocabulary of the bercian dialect in the publication: " Vocabulario de El Bierzo ", where the author makes clear that after his fieldwork, he would re-place the dividing band between the asturleoneses and galician-portuagueses speeches- ones it fitting strictly to the tracing drawn by the course of the river Sil. Jesus García y García, in 1994, places the above mentioned band from the High place Cúa up to part of Ponferrada's municipality.(Dehesas, Fuentesnuevas). The first written references refiriéndose to this autochthonous speech like bercian dialect, we find them in the middle of the 19th century in Isidoro Andrés's work of Plain, " I Resemble Puentedeume in dialect berciano ". 1860. Published in the Magazine Esla. In 1861, Antonio Fernandez Morales writes to instances of Mariano Cubí, co-author, in bercian dialect: " Ensaios Poéticos en Dialecto Berciano ".

Nowadays almost it has disappeared, perviviendo in many expressions of daily use. Expressions and proper vocabulary have been gathered in diverse works being some of the most interesting the realized ones for Luís A. Pastrana and David Lopez, at the beginning of the decade of the 70 of the 20th century that consented in the sample of notions of the morphology and syntax of the dialect and one interesting dictionary of expressions and words and Manuel Gutiérrez Tuñón's doctoral, tesís " The Speech of The Bierzo ", published in 1975.
