David Benjamin Room (born 1964) is an American social entrepreneur, author, and who is perhaps best known for his work to raise the awareness of peak oil and the promotion of responses to our oil and climate predicaments. He co-founded [http://www.baylocalize.org Bay Localize] and was instrumental in the emergence of [http://www.postcarbon.org Post Carbon Institute] and [http://www.globalpublicmedia.com Global Public Media] .

Background

Room was born in San Francisco to a creole mother from New Orleans and first generation American father of Czech origin, who gave him up for adoption at birth. His adopted father is a leading alcohol researcher and sociologist. His adopted mother was a school teacher. In 1982 he graduated from Berkeley High, and then attended Stanford University where he majored in Electrical Engineering and later received a Masters in Engineering Economic Systems (with is now considered by Stanford Engineering to be Management Science] .

After university, Room worked as a management consulting firm and later in various capacities in the formative years of the Internet. He was formerly married to a VP at Safeway. They had a child born in 2001 who remains a major source of inspiration and motivation for Room.

Dave is founder of [http://energypreparedness.net Energy Preparedness] , a consultancy on responding to our energy and climate predicaments. His main contract is to be the coordinator of the Local Clean Energy Alliance of the East Bay, which is a group of nonprofits and local businesses focused on bringing more renewable energy and energy efficiency to the East Bay.

He co-founded is on the the steering committee of [http://baylocalize.org Bay Localize] , a public benefit organization focused on building capacity for generating power, growing food, and capturing water in the Bay Area. Dave Room also founded of [http://mkinghubbert.com The Hubbert Tribute] which is educating presidential campaigns about peak oil and the need for oil transparency as well as deciphering American energy policy over the past 6 decades so that the mistakes of yesteryear are not multiplied into the future.

Previously, he played a key role in many aspects of [http://www.postcarbon.org Post Carbon Institute] ’s emergence. When he started working on [http://www.postcarbon.org Post Carbon Institute] in Winter 2003, it was a four page web site and a lecture series. At that point, [http://www.globalpublicmedia.com Global Public Media] was a nine months out of date. During his tenure at Post carbon and GPM, Dave did the following:

* Managed PCI and GPM sites for 2 years

* Drove and managed 3 platform changes of GPM site and ultimately to drupal
* Performed over 30 audio and video interviews when GPM had gone dormant
* Worked on the concept of the relocalization network
* Managed content at GPM for 2 years
* Developed original outpost guide
* Attended meetings and worked with bay area local groups
* Consulted with groups outside of the bay area
* Gave numerous presentations at conferences and after screenings nationwide
* Managed the online store
* Cultivated key donor
* Recruited key board member

Dave has also worked on several small internet companies in various capacities, as well as at a boutique management consulting firm called Decision Focus Incorporated that was focused on optimization, environmental risk management, and decision analysis.

Writing

Room is a critic of our energy intensive cities and the psuedo-monopolies enjoyed by investor owned utilities and governance structures that put the welfare of property and capital over people, communities, and nature. He is currently writing an expose on PG&E and its roots to a system programmed for overshoot.
