The openSUSE project is a community program sponsored by
Novell ,AMD and IP Exchange [ cite web | url = http://en.opensuse.org/Sponsors | title = Sponsors - openSUSE | date = 2008-08-05 | accessdate = 2008-08-05 ] . Its main goal is promoting the use of Linux everywhere by developing theopenSUSE Linux distribution and by providing an environment for open source collaboration through tools such as theopenSUSE Build Service .Since it is an open project, anyone can contribute to the openSUSE project by editing the wiki, translating the distribution, creating software patches, developing rpm packages, reporting bugs or suggesting features.Every week, the openSUSE project publishes openSUSE Weekly News, a newsletter containing reports on the project and distribution, and interviews with members of the openSUSE project.
On May 2008, the openSUSE Project launched lizards.opensuse.org, a blogging platform for openSUSE members [ cite web | url = http://news.opensuse.org/2008/05/07/blogging-platform-for-opensuse-launched/ | title = Blogging Platform for openSUSE Launched | date = 2008-08-04 | accessdate = 2008-08-04 ] .

* Make openSUSE the easiest Linux distribution for anyone to obtain and the most widely used open source platform.
* Provide an environment for open source collaboration that makes openSUSE the world's best Linux distribution for new and experienced Linux users.
* Dramatically simplify and open the development and packaging processes to make openSUSE the platform of choice for Linux hackers and application developers.Governance
The initial board was appointed by Novell. In the future, the board members will be elected by the community with the exception of the chair person, who will be appointed by Novell.The current board members are Pascal Bleser, Francis Giannaros, Andreas Jaeger, Stephan Kulow and Federico Mena-Quintero [ cite web | url = http://en.opensuse.org/Board | title = Board - openSUSE | date = 2008-08-04 | accessdate = 2008-08-04 ] .
The main tasks of the board are:
* Act as a central point of contact
* Help resolve conflicts, communicate community interests to Novell
* Facilitate communication with all areas of the community
