Elizaveta Voronyanskaya

Elizaveta Voronyanskaya ( - September 1973) was a typist for the manuscript of "The Gulag Archipelago", [The BBC obituary of Solzhenitsyn states that Voronyanskaya was an assistant to Solzhenitsyn as well. cite web|title=Solzhenitsyn obituary|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2276650.stm|accessdate=2008-08-04] first published 26 December 1973, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn ( 1919 - 2008). The manuscript for "The Gulag Archipelago" had already been smuggled out of the Soviet Union on microfilm. This work, a history of the Gulag prison camps, was ready for publication in New York and Paris by 1973 but Solzhenitsyn had wished for first publication in the Soviet Union.

These plans were upset by the KGB interrogation of Voronyanskaya; the KGB then managed to uncover the hiding place of the manuscript. Voronyanskaya then hung herself. [Michael T. Kaufman (Monday, August 4, 2008), "The New York Times" p. A16] Solzhenitsyn was then arrested on 12 February 1974 and forced into exile in the West until his return to Russia two decades later.
