Sir Edward Waterfield Hayward (
November 10 1903 -August 13 1983 ) was an Australian businessman. He was born inAdelaide ,South Australia .Sir Edward was educated at
St Peter's College, Adelaide , where he took up polo among other sports that he excelled in. After completing his education Hayward worked as a Jackaroo in New South Wales for several years. After working for Sydney Snow and Co. Ltd., he moved back to Adelaide to join the family businessJohn Martin & Co. , a department store chain, in 1931.One of his first jobs at John Martin & Co. was to visit Canada and the United States to gather ideas from department stores in those countries. It was on this trip that he came up with the idea to start the
Adelaide Christmas Pageant . Since the first pageant in 1933 it was become a much loved tradition. [ [South Australian Biographical Entry] ]During
World War II Hayward served in theAustralian Army ; he was 36 when he enlisted into the army. During the war Hayward noted the popularity of the soft drinkCoca-Cola with the Americans. After the war Hayward established a franchise to bottle and sell Coca-Cola in Adelaide. He served as president and chairman of this franchise for 33 years.Hayward became president of the St John Council in 1952. He became responsible for ambulance services in South Australia and was made a Knight of the Order in 1959.
He was made a
Knight Bachelor on10 June 1961 .Sir Edward and his wife Lady Ursula were art enthusiasts and built up a world-class art collection. This collection is housed in their Adelaide home
Carrick Hill , which was bequeathed to the state on Hayward's death (his wife having predeceased him).References
