Chicken Delemarché

Chicken Delemarché

Chicken Delemarché (closely translated to "Chicken of the Market") is a traditional Jamaican festival meal originating from the late 1960s. Despite being traditionally Jamaican, the first dish was made by Frenchman Piérre Vousbaiser which had actually became apparent in 1973 when Vousbaiser himself showed up at Caribbean Cookoff '73, defeating Jamaican Rod Shoeboy in the grand final. Claiming recognition, Vousbaiser was able to keep Chicken Delemarché popular.

History

As previously mentioned, Chicken Delemarché was first brought to public attention in the late 1960s. It received public attention in Jamaica throughout the decade in particular, especially when reggae trio Monsoon Poppas released their #37 hit "Market Chicken" in 1969. By this time it has became apparent that Jamaica really had a signature meal at their proposal, but it wasn't until 1973 when the truth behind the dish was revealed. French cook Piérre Vousbaiser showed up unanounced at the annual Caribbean Cookoff in said year. Recalled words spoken were "I do not cook to serve, I have made the inedible edible, Delemarché is (French cursing) my creation, (slight pause) my creation!" At first nobody believed Vousbaiser, but when he finally won the competition, he resumed the meal as vegetarian also.

In 1988, Piérre Vousbaiser released his self-published autobiography "The Great Chicken-Related Triumph" which made it accepted that he was very proud of his upset. Chapter 3 "That Time I Won That Thing" showed just how delighted he was. "By this time I realised that I had not only won a cookoff, but I was also the greatest man ever to live."

In 1994, Piérre Vousbaiser died after choking on Chicken Delemarchè.

Controversy

In the early '80s, to promote Chicken Delemarchè, commercials had started to be produced. But a certain 1986 advertisement became very controversial. It had been noted that during the advert, a man was masturbating over Chicken Delemarchè. A spokesperson claimed that this was intentional, and because "that's how damn good Chicken Delemarchè really is".Creator Pièrre Vousbaiser commented on the commercial as being "obscene yet very true", therefore the courts decided to drop charges.
